PRE-CONCEPTIONS OF A.I. & ITS POTENTIAL IMPACT ON THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

As I start out my journey in this project I am eager to learn more about Artificial Intelligence, its power and influence and its future potential.

These are certainly very exciting times ahead and we are at a point now where A.I. is in the public eye on a major scale and is being dubbed as ‘the fourth industrial revolution’. Analysts believe it will be bigger than 3D Printing, the Cloud and even bigger than the Internet itself.

Having only just began my research recently, without speaking to any experts, my pre-conceptions of using A.I. in the music industry are somewhat sceptical and pessimistic. I say this because although the opportunities and technology are so exciting and has so many possibilities and capabilities, I can’t help but feel that it will have a detrimental impact on musicians.

Such technology could threaten the jobs of composers and DJs in the future as the A.I. could become more than capable of writing music to the standard that humans can. Potentially even artistic, emotional music further down the line, as demonstrated by AIVA, the world’s first virtual artist recognised by an Author’s Rights Society.

I’m sure my thoughts and opinions on the subject will change as I speak to the case studies I have highlighted and I will address my concerns to them and see their response. I will certainly be delving into this project with an open mind and very much hope that I can conclude that A.I.’s impact on the music industry in the future will be very much positive rather than negative but this remains to be seen as I am sure I will be confronted with a range of opinions on this topic.
